City of Canals : Amsterdam

With a population of just over 1.2 million, Amsterdam is the largest city in The Netherlands. It is a city characterized by beautiful canals, picturesque sights, cyclists, Tulips and bustling cafes.  This multicultural city warmly welcomes 3.5 million visitors every year.  The heart of the city is so picturesque, it looks like an open air museum.  The Inner canal district is an internationally protected heritage site. Some landmarks and canals date back to the 13th century. The city was often called as the “Venice of the North”, as it has around 165 canals crossed by over a 1000 bridges.

Public transport in Amsterdam includes Buses, Trams, Metro, taxis and Bicycles. There is also a free shuttle service from Schiphol Airport to nearby hotels. Besides, other means are readily available to reach the city center. The best way to explore the city center is by rented bicycles and by foot. There are dedicated lanes and cycle stands all around the city. Just like Paris, Amsterdam is also a city which is best explored by foot. Some of the major sights in Amsterdam may be Tulip Garden, Harbour and Art galleries. The Harbour operates ferry services and also vessels to other countries. Amsterdam is a small city, making all attractions reachable at walking distance.  In the outskirts,  is The Madurodam. An hour train ride from the city, Madurodam  is in The Hague. This place is also called as Mini Holland as it has miniatures of all landmarks of the city of Amsterdam, Rotterdam, canals and much more. In short, it is a working model of Holland.

Amsterdam is the home of the Heineken Beer. The Heineken experience is a heritage site where they show you how the famous Beer was made. They also offer a free beer at the end of the tour. When it comes to food, Amsterdam offers a wide variety of cuisines. You will find lots of restaurants offering Asian, European and American food.  Amsterdam is famous for its coffee shops. People from all around the world come to visit them. They are bustling with people all the time.

The Netherlands is famous for its Cheese and wooden products. On the countryside, you would find wooden shoe factories. They have great designs and quality. You can find them in local market as well, but try and visit the factory to understand more. Shopping in Amsterdam is good. Prices are reasonable and you would find all International brands and stores out here.

KLM is the National Airline of The Netherlands. Schiphol Airport is one of the busiest airports of the world. It not only acts as a hub for transit passengers but also welcomes all major airlines of the world. KLM has a wide network and has services all around the world. It is thus easy to find a plane to Amsterdam. Besides, you can also use the Eurostar and the Eurail network. If you are visiting other European cities like London and Brussels, we highly recommend you to travel by Rail or Road. The views are awesome.
