Guide to the Capital of Assam: Guwahati

Umananda-Temple

Guwahati is located in the North Eastern part of India. It is the capital of the state of Assam. Assam is known for its cuisine, Tea and Temples.  Guwahati is a bustling city with people from all cultures. It is the biggest city in North East India. The city serves as a hub for supplies to other small North Eastern states of India. The North East part of India is a hidden gem. For years, this area struggled to attract tourists, but now tourists from other parts of India and Asia are flocking here. The city is famous for its spiritual feel as it has some very famous Temples. People who love Tea know that Assam Tea is World famous. In fact, Assam Tea is exported all over the World. Guwahati is a medium sized city and has a few attractions which make it a nice and beautiful city.

Assam-State-Zoo

Guwahati is a city with small number of attractions. Getting around is fine. You have to depend on local buses, Taxis and Rickshaws. Attractions are a little far from each other, so travelling time is more. Main attractions in Guwahati include Umananda Temple, Kamakhya Temple, Navagraha Temple, Temples of Hajo, Pobitora Wildlife Sanctuary, Assam State Zoo, Chandubi Lake and Paltan Bazaar. Guwahati can be easily explored in a day. The Wildlife Sanctuary may require an additional day, but 2 days are enough.

Kamakhya temple

Food is exotic in Assam. You will find some of the best Bengali and Assamese cuisine here. Apart from that, a lot of North Indian and South Indian Restaurants are available in Guwahati. International cuisine is hard to find here. If you are travelling from Europe or North America, you have to settle with the local Indian cuisine. Tea is world famous here. Don’t forget to try it out.

Pobitora Wildlife Sanctuary

Shopping is decent in Guwahati. It is not as big as Delhi or Mumbai. Mostly you will find local made goods and Indian Brands. International Brands are hard to find. We didn’t find anything appealing other than Tea and Spices. There are numerous varieties of Tea and Spices here. Thus, if you want to Shop, shop for Tea and Spices.

Brahmaputra River

Guwahati is a fairly connected city. It has an International Airport, but not with many Flights. Mostly it is served by Domestic Flights. We would advise you to land in Kolkata and make a Domestic connection. Kolkata is a well connected International Airport. For Indian Travelers, Flights and Trains are available from all over India. If you have extra days, visit Shillong as it is just a 2-hour Drive Hill station in the state of Meghalaya.

So, pack your bags and leave for a vacation to Guwahati…...
