The Mountainous and Hilly areas of Meghalaya are a great example of Natural Beauty. It is a state which attracts Nature Lovers from all over the world. A few years back, Meghalaya was a hidden gem yet to be discovered. Now the state sees millions of tourists every year. Meghalaya is a small state, thus can be explored fully in 4-5 days. In this Blog, we will share some Travel tips for Meghalaya, and places to visit in the state.

Elephant-Falls.

The capital of Meghalaya is Shillong. All tourist attractions are located within 100 kms of the capital. Meghalaya is a state made for Road trips. People who enjoy Road Trips in Europe, will definitely enjoy here as well. You can hire a car, Bike or Taxi to explore the state. The Hilly and Mountainous Roads are very good and give you a breath-taking natural view. Places to visit in Meghalaya include Nohkalikai Waterfalls, Umiam Lake, Ward’s Lake, Elephant Falls, Living Roots Bridge, Butterfly Museum, Air Force Museum, Golf Course, Shillong Police Bazaar, 7 sister falls, Mawlynnong Village, Cathedral of Mary Help, Mawsmai Caves, Laitlum Canyons, Mawsynram Village, Lady Hydari Park, Dawki River & Village etc. Some of these attractions are in the small Town of Cherrapunji, one of the wettest areas in the world.

Umiam Lake

Meghalaya is a place where the Road journey is more scenic than the attractions. It is thus a place where Road Trips and Backpack Excursions are very popular. If you are travelling in winters between October and February, you will enjoy snowfall in the whole state. The beautiful climate and warm nature of people makes it a great place to relax and enjoy with family. If you are looking for car Rentals, take it from Guwahati. Guwahati is just 120 kms from Shillong.

Shopping is fine in Shillong. Woollen clothing is famous here. Although, most of the Textiles are imported from other parts of India. If you are an Indian, you will not find anything special to buy. If you are travelling from abroad, you may find some reasonable stuff. The state does not have any high-end retail stores. Most of them are locally owned. You can devote some time in shopping, but make sure that most of your time goes into exploring the place.

Mawlynnong Village

Food is decent in Meghalaya. You will face some problems in the outskirts as Restaurants are not that many. In the city of Shillong, you will find all the local and some famous Restaurants. Basically, Shillong will have a lot of Eating options. Other places will have small hawkers and peddlers offering street food. In fact, you must keep some Fruits and Snacks for Road journeys throughout Meghalaya. The outskirts of Shillong is all Mountainous and Forest area. Thus, they don’t have many Food options.

Dawki River

Shillong is not a well-connected city. It has an Airport but is very small and operate a small number of flights. The best way to visit Meghalaya is to fly to Guwahati and take a cab. The cab ride from Guwahati to Shillong is very scenic. Also, many taxis are available outside Guwahati Airport to take you to Shillong. If you are travelling from Abroad, we would suggest you to land in Kolkata and take a connecting flight directly to Shillong. This is because Guwahati is well connected with all Indian cities, but not with other countries.

So, pack your Bags and leave for a Breath-taking holiday in Meghalaya.
